Diary of an Edinburgher

Tunnel mural

I think the Central Belt in Scotland had the best weather today. Doesn’t often happen, so worth noting. It was HOT.

Archie went off with Elizabeth for the day, so we decided to take the car and go and investigate the Colinton Tunnel.  I’ve seen it so many times on Instagram. However, we weren’t quite sure where it was.

We parked and set off down a road, following some other people who were looking for it. Colinton is a very cute wee village. We all met some people at the bottom of the hill, who told us to go back up the hill and go through a gate. No signs anywhere. We followed the other group through woodland beside the Water of Leith, up steps, down steps, under bridges and round about, and eventually came to it.

But it was worth it. It’s about 80 metres long, full of huge murals, some by primary school kids. Some are quite spectacular (Extras). There is some connection to Robert Louis Stevenson - he write a poem called ‘To a Railway Carriage".

By the time we came back home, it was steaming hot, so we set up the comfy chairs in the sun/shade, and settled down with our respective audiobooks and G&Ts and a most pleasant afternoon was had.

Then the family from upstairs came out for a play. The three wee girls are delightful, and we had a good chat, for the first time, with the parents. They have travelled widely, even to Mongolia. And they’ve been to NZ.

Yesterday’s promised delivery arrived at 10am this morning. We now have plenty of coffee pods to last a lifetime. Or at least a month or so for us.
