Diary of an Edinburgher

A brief town visit

I wanted to go into town to check out what damage they were doing to Princes Street Gardens again, as they are setting up the Christmas markets. Every year they - Underbelly, the company who run the Festive Season ‘attractions’ every year - take over the Gardens and trash the grass, which takes about 6 months to recover, being a quagmire for most of that time.

However, this year, they are only using the ‘hard standing’ areas, just along the top path, not the grassed area. Thank goodness. The Gardens were looking lovely. (Extra)

We had a wander round to St Andrew’s Square, which has also been trashed over several years with tacky wee wooden huts selling dubious food stuffs, pop up pubs and ice rinks. Not this year!

We checked out Gordon Ramsay’s newly opened restaurant - it was mobbed! Which was surprising, as he’s brought his London prices with him. Every other restaurant was mobbed too, which is good to see.

I decided I’d had enough, and so got the bus home, but the others walked. Funnily enough, I was only home 10 minutes before them! They can walk fast when I’m not holding them up. Besides, I had to wait 15 minutes for my bus.

This evening we had a visit from Hamish and his dad. Archie got such a surprise to see his big pal - he went crazy! Hamish’s dad is off to Copenhagen at the weekend, so we were able to give him a few tips.
