Irony?

It was the Minx who spotted this, just as we were driving through Natland on our way back from the office, this afternoon. It looks, doesn't it, like someone bringing a bit of fun to this week's Platinum Jubilee celebrations. I think that's what it was.

It's not always quite so clear, though. My personal feeling is that while there's a lot of affection for the queen, nationally we aren't the monarchists that history and our newspapers suggest we once were, and I think a lot of people see the jubilee as an excuse for a bit of fun. And yet, and yet...

I think there are some hardcore monarchists out there. In the upper classes, it's those who want to maintain the status quo, but in the rest of the population, what's the story? Why would you support and feel loyalty to people who are simply born into wealth and privilege?

My view is that the sooner we get rid of the monarchy and abolish the notion that some are born better than others, the sooner we'll see a fairer society with a bit more social mobility.
