The Heat Is On

But only for an hour a day at the moment. I always said that the central heating would not be turned on until October and that the energy crisis meant we would not be repeating last winters profligate “three times a day plus a few extra hours” policy.
So, for the time being, we get an hour in the morning to take the chill off the house and put a bit of heat into the towel rail - nothing worse than a damp, cold towel when you get out of the shower. If we get cold during the day or evening, then it’ll be a case of donning extra clothing or sitting under blankets to keep warm. The gas fire in the lounge will be a purely decorative item this winter. I’m not saying these policies might not change in January, but my intention is to come out of winter with EDF owing me money, rather than the other way round.
In some ways, this energy crisis might be a good thing for the environment. If everyone is thinking about how much gas or electric they use from a purely financial point of view, this will naturally have a knock on effect on how much is consumed overall. That will be good for the planet and might also trim the energy companies’ profits as we buy less of their products. And, hopefully, people will continue to closely monitor their energy usage, even if prices do come down again at some point in the future, which has got to be a good thing.
