Speckled Wood Butterfly

This morning it was sunny and I saw this while walking Libby in the woodland/ grassland area near the river. There were lots of these butterflies and some other types too. I thought it was a meadow brown until I looked it up. The Speckled Wood has increased by 71% since the 1970s and is found throughout most of England, Wales and Ireland and is becoming increasing widespread in Scotland too.

I have signed up the Big  Butterfly Count and downloaded the app which helps you identify them to record species. However I did not do the count today as I aim to do it at my allotment on a sunny day.

The weather deteriorated and we ended up having lots of rain in the afternoon. We had the family and a friend for a nice roast lunch and then played some board games after with the children.
