Horwood House

We called here the other night for a look around and a menu taster.

Its a lovely building & at 1st glance looks older than it really is; it was built in 1911 for the Denny Family the brief being that it should be a comfortable family home & that it should give the appearance of being well established. Its construction included the use of old tiles & stone window frames, with the bricks being imported from Holland.

Its claim to fame is that Percy Thrower was born here. His father was Head Gardener at the house. As a child & into his teens he showed a real flair for all things horticultural & the Dennys encouraged this talent & he progressed from Horwood House to Windsor Castle. It was here that his talents were recognised by the BBC who helped him to become a household name in the gardening world,

In the 1930s the house had to be sold because of the Economic Depression & today it is a hotel & conference centre.

Had an SOS 1st thing from N who had lost her car keys. We had the spare set & so I rushed them around.

Its now 1200hrs & it is raining - much needed by the garden.
